Styrenic Foams for Insulation of Buildings

Styrenic Foams contribute significantly to the global CO2 emission reduction targets in the building sector. In particular, the insulation of the building envelope reduces the emission of greenhouse gases due to the low energy consumption for heating or cooling the residential building.

Since 1951, BASF is passionate about Styrenics Foams and continuously develops the product portfolio further. Styrene is the basis for our polymer products Neopor®, Styropor® - both expandable polystyrene (EPS) - and the rigid insulation foam Styrodur®, extruded polystyrene (XPS).

Neopor® and Styrodur® offer solutions for the construction industry that have not only excellent thermal insulation properties but also an outstanding cost-benefit ratio.

Styropor®

BASF´s EPS experience goes back more than 65 years: as early as 1951, the Company patented Styropor® the classic white expandable polystyrene, thereby setting the standard for many insulation and packaging applications.

In 1997, BASF took a major step forward with regard to EPS: the material was enriched with particles of graphite and the insulation properties of the foam were therefore significantly improved. This became the powerful Neopor®.

Thanks to Styrodur®, BASF can look back on more than 50 years of experience in the XPS market. It was in 1964 that the company began producing this green insulation, which excels with its high quality, diverse applications, and robustness.
