Sustainable construction with Styrenic Foams throughout the life cycle
Our products are sustainable not only because their insulating properties help to reduce CO2 emissions. BASF already sets guidelines when selecting suppliers so that the required raw materials can already be procured responsibly. To show that a plastic can be sustainable we have summarized further aspects for you on this page.
Production
The Production Verbund ensures a competitive supply of key products to all segments with value-added chains rooted in the Verbund.
Technology
The Technology Verbund leverages technological advantages across all segments by breadth, impact, and best in class expertise (e.g. biotech sciences, catalysis, formulation platform).
Market
The Market Verbund creates customer relevance by size and with a broad portfolio, for example automotive/ transportation.
Digital
The Digital Verbund systematically uses and harvests the huge advantages and potential offered by digitalisation throughout the BASF network (data management, scale, artificial intelligence).
CO2 emission savings of 67% during the production of Styrodur® BMB and even 90% during the production of Neopor® BMB because of sustainable raw materials
Produced in accordance with the requirements of the White Paper published by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Circular Economy 100 Network.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics confirms that, if properly maintained, an external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS) with EPS/Neopor® should have a lifespan of at least 40 years.
BASF´s EPS experience goes back more than 65 years: as early as 1951, the Company patented Styropor® the classic white expandable polystyrene, thereby setting the standard for many insulation and packaging applications
In 1997, BASF took a major step forward with regard to EPS: the material was enriched with particles of graphite and the insulation properties of the foam were therefore significantly improved. This became the powerful Neopor®.
Thanks to Styrodur®, BASF can look back on more than 50 years of experience in the XPS market. It was in 1964 that the company began producing this green insulation, which excels with its high quality, diverse applications, and robustness.
Circular economy means decoupling growth from resource consumption. BASF is driving circular economy by making the most of the limited resources of our planet: We keep them in use for as long as possible, minimize waste and create value with renewable resources.
